Description

Sweet & piquant with a bold and rich finish, this Balinese coffee is a Shade-Grown and wet-processed blend of five varietals. The Subak Abian farmers organization donates 5 cents per pound to the Begawan Foundation to support breeding and release of a bird- the bali Starling(jalak bali in the local language). This is Bali’s mascot, yet as of 2001 there are only 6 birds found in the wild. The term “Subak” refers to an organization of farmers working together to help irrigate rice patties. Subaks in the Kitamani region follow the traditional Balinese philosophy called “Tri ita karana” which commands harmony or balance between humans, humans and god and humans and the Environment. At higher altitudes these same Subaks work not only on water basin schemes, but on coffee as well. In the north-eastern kitamani highlands each farmer has an average of .8-1.8 hectares of land and are organized into Subals of 100 members each. This coffee carries the Kintamani Geographic Indicator Certification, an inititiative to protect the brand of coffees that come from this lauded region. This seal also guarantees that the coffee is shade grown and organically fertilized .
